My neighborhood's entrance is on the inside of a blind corner. For some reason there's absolutely nothing in place to make it safe. It's a one-way stop and that's it. At least five people have been killed in it and my attempts at having it made safer have all been denied. "We have determined that there are no visibility issues with this intersection." Even though it is impossible to see southbound traffic until it is too close for you to leave my street without them hitting the brakes. All it takes is one guy not paying attention, and I'll be T-boned. But that's not what happened tonight. Oh, no, it's much worse. This is what has caused some of the previous fatal accidents: impatient jackasses passing in the center lane.

Kinja'd!!!

I've contacted the DOT multiple times about having this turned into a 3-way stop or at least adding a barrier to the left turn lane just north of the intersection, and apparently - even though it would have been enough to save three innocent college freshmen and the not-so-innocent 50-year-old father who hit them just a few years ago - "there is no immediate concern."

Seriously, fuck that. I'm not going to sit around and wait for another one of my neighbors to be killed due to the local government's negligence. But I don't know where else to turn if they keep telling me that there's nothing wrong...

I'd keep writing to the governor's office or get the media involved, show them everything. I generally hate the media but if you want to annoy the crap out of them, thats the way to go. Tell them people have died, you regularly feel in danger and the locals won't do anything. I have the opposite problem, although its a good thing I guess.

The center lane passing thing is pretty shitty yes. That's not the fault of the road signs, that's people literally disobeying the law. Center turn lanes are for turning. Not for passing. If you pass an intersection while in the turn lane, you fucked up.

However, if you are the white car, as I assume you are, you were too far forward in the turn lane yourself. The white car should be stopped right where the green arrow ends. No reason at all for it to be in the middle of the intersection.

But if you are talking about turning left as you pull out of the side street in that pic, looks like there's plenty of visibility in both directions unless there's a hill or something. You just have to pull forward to clear the trees, and there's quite a distance between the stop line and the edge of the driving lane to allow you to do so.

hate to be that guy, but get the local media involved! They have magic capabilities and seem to get anything done. If it's just you writing to the government, you won't get anywhere. Where you have the local news team behind you, results happen!

That's a terrible Intersection .. Something needs to be done

The picture isn't entirely accurate. The green car actually made almost no effort to get back over; he just kind of coasted along. The actual incident was probably just before that one storm drain on the left.

As for visibility, there is a hill, yeah. You also can't see it from the picture, but the grass is also a bit of a hill. You can see everything in the picture, but the speed limit is 40 and people regularly go around 50 or 55, and even if they were only doing 40 it still wouldn't allow much time to react. You basically just have to pull out as soon as you don't see a car, and half the time one will appear just as you hit the gas. If you're towing a trailer or driving a large vehicle, you'd pretty much just have to force your way through. The garbage truck has been hit at least half a dozen times for that reason.

So the real problem is that people are driving too fast and not obeying the speed limit. Probably also why they keep swerving into the turn lane, because they're going 55 and some dude "suddenly" stops to turn and they don't have to slow down.

I'd see if you can raise funds to get a sign or billboard put before the hill warning drivers to slow down because there is a high traffic intersection ahead. The sign is cheaper and it's a lot less likely to get DOT on your ass than trying to get a barrier put in or a fake 3 way stop.
